Child Safety Seat Technicians

While installing and using child safety seats may appear to be easy enough, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cps/index.html, has estimated that close to 3 out of 4 parents do not properly use child restraints ... and if you are one of them, that child safety seat may not protect your child the way it should.

The West Columbia Police Department has several trained safety seat technicians who are available on an appointment basis to properly install child safety seats for the community. These officers provide a much needed service to reduce injuries to children. To make an appointment, contact the police department at 794-0721.

Alive at 25

The West Columbia Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Division has been certified  through the South Carolina National Safety Council, to provide the Alive at 25 Defensive Driving program. The Alive at 25 Defensive Driving program is an intervention program for drivers between the ages of 15-24, which is statistically, the group most likely to be involved in fatal traffic collisions.

This course is offered to young drivers, in an effort to help prevent traffic violations, traffic collisions, and/or fatalities. This course places its focus on educating young drivers to adopt safer driving practices, take responsibility for their behavior in various driving situations, and to be aware of many of the typical driving hazards. Unlike traditional driver’s education courses that focus on the mechanics of driving, Alive at 25 addresses the behaviors of drivers.

The 4-1/2 hour program is limited to 30 students per class, and will be offered periodically at the West Columbia Police Department (200 N 12th Street, West Columbia, SC 29169).

If you are a young adult who is interested in improving your defensive driving skills, please contact Patrolman First Class Jason Spears with the West Columbia Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Division at (803) 794-0721 extension 856 or the South Carolina National Safety Council at (800) 733-6185 to receive a registration form.

The registration fee for the Alive at 25 course is $35.00. The South Carolina National Safety Council does offer scholarships to drivers who require financial assistance. Sponsorship registration forms are available from the South Carolina National Safety Council by calling (803) 732-6778.

For additional information, contact Patrolman First Class Jason Spears at 794-0721 x856.
