The government is located in the central part of the state, one of the top growth areas of South Carolina. The economic condition and outlook of the government have progressively improved during the past five years. During this time, for example, a number of regionally known retail and wholesale firms have started or expanded activities in the area. In addition, increases in service-related industries also were noted. This growth has had a positive effect on employment and the government's tax base.
The community currently has a 1.9 percent unemployment rate, compared to a statewide rate of 4.9 percent. Based on current projections, this trend is expected to continue into the next decade. While having a positive impact, growth also presents significant challenges for the government. If the present high level of services is to be maintained, the government, in the future, will need to explore new methods of obtaining financial resources.
