Police
Officer (NO CURRENT VACANCIES)
| The West Columbia Police Department seeks qualified applicants for the position of Police Officer. Primary duties include enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety and other police officer duties. Salary Range $30,517.18 - $42,724.49. The City provides take home vehicle for officers living in proximity to the city. Essential job functions include: |

- Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
|
|
- Must have basic computer skills
|
- Must have a valid S.C. driver’s license and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle under normal and emergency situations, sometimes at high speeds, in fair and inclement weather
|
- Must not have a disqualifying incident on driving record such as driving under the influence of alcohol or dangerous drugs, reckless homicide, involuntary manslaughter or leaving the scene of an accident, etc.
|
- Must be able to physically restrain another individual
|
- Must be able to physically defend oneself
|
- Must be able to maintain focus and mental preparedness of shifts of 12-14 hours
|
- Must be able to load a weapon as well as safely and accurately fire a semi-automatic weapon
|
- Must be able to successfully pass a medical exam to include vision, hearing, and color blindness to S.C. Criminal Justice Academy standards
|
- Must be able to see well in a low light environment
|
- Must be able to pass a drug test
|
- Must be able to pass a polygraph exam
|
- Must be able to pass a psychological test to establish suitability for the demands and stresses of law enforcement employment
|
- Must have a satisfactory credit history
|
- Must be of good moral character as determined by a background investigation
|
- Must be able to successfully pass a physical agility test that includes the ability to run, climb, jump, lift, and drag heavy weight (over 100 lbs.) within standards and times established by the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy
|
- Must have good communication skills
|
- Must have no convictions for crimes of moral turpitude as defined in law
|
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme heat, cold, humidity and inclement weather
|
- Must be able to work varying shifts

| Qualified applicants must complete a personal questionnaire, and provide certified copies of driver's license, social security card, birth certificate, high school diploma or GED, recent credit report, all DD214's, and 10 year driving history from every state in which license. Applicant must also provide a full length color photograph that is recent. Some items are necessary in order to verify identity and complete a background investigation. Park Ranger (Position Closed)
The Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Park Ranger. A job description for the position is below. If you wish to apply, turn in your COMPLETED City of West Columbia employment application to the Chief of Police at 200 North 12th Street, West Columbia, SC 29169. EOE.
Salary Range: $24,814 - $34,741 per year
Under occasional supervision, patrols the West Columbia Riverwalk Park and adjacent parking areas to maintain a safe and secure environment protecting citizens and property. Monitors the park for maintenance and repair issues and communicates these to the proper department. Interacts with and assists the public who utilize the park. Administers First Aid and CPR in the event of emergency. Enforces park rules and city ordinance violations as a Class III Officer. Testifies in court as needed. Assists with special events being conducted at the park. Contacts dispatch when law enforcement assistance is needed. Tests emergency call boxes and reports problems. Responds to emergency call boxes when activated. Maintains fuel/oil and operational readiness of patrol vehicle/cart. Documents incidents that occur on park property. Works in conjunction with responders and city employees to include police, fire rescue, animal control and park maintenance and sanitation. Unlocks and locks Riverwalk restroom facilities. Reports to the Sergeant of the Community Action Team.
